Mirrodin Besieged Event Decks: Deck Lists

February 18, 2011 Leave a comment

Wizards have published the decks lists for the two Event Decks that they will be releasing on February 25. This will be in time for players to pick up one for Mirrodin Besieged Game Day, which is March 5-6.

However, be careful if you are planning on using one with a view to win an ‘Action’ card. The complete decks (including sideboards) are not fully affiliated with one side or the other. “Into the Breach” main deck is Mirran, but has two sideboard copies of Into the Core. While "Infect & Defile" has two Go for the Throats in its sideboard. So, you will need to swap those out for the appropriately watermarked or unaffiliated cards. Suture Priest

Following on from yesterday’s post regarding the cards that will be ‘available’ as prizes to those taking part in the Mirrodin Besieged Game Day, on March 5 and 6. I thought I would take a closer look at one of those cards, Suture Priest, the 1/1 Creature – Cleric for 1W.

So, nothing spectacular in terms of cost vs power/toughness. But let’s now take a look at it’s two abilities. First up we have the “whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may gain 1 life”. Here we have a pretty classic life gain ability, that you will see on other white permanents. Here are 3 cards that all have a very similar sort of ability:

Auriok Champion, a Creature – Human Cleric from Fifth Dawn, with the same cost vs power/toughness but with an additional ability of “protection from black and from red”. The 1 life gain has a slightly different ‘older’ wording to it “whenever another creature comes into play…” as opposed to “whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control…”

Auriok_Champion

Soul Warden, a Creature – Human Cleric most recently from M10 (also in several earlier sets), has a lower cost (W) for the same power/toughness, it’s ability is triggered “whenever another creature enters the battlefield…” and the life gain is not optional (…you gain 1 life).

Soul_Warden

Soul’s Attendant, a Creature – Human Cleric from Rise Of The Eldrazi, is almost identical to Soul Warden. However its life gain ability is optional (…you may gain 1 life), just like Suture Priest.

Soul's_Attendant

There are also some green permanents which have 1 life gain when a creature enters the battlefield/comes into play:

Essence Warden, a Creature – Elf Shaman, with 1/1 for  G, and a non-optional 1 life gain “whenever another creature comes into play, you gain…”

Essence_Warden

Leyline Of Vitality, an Enchantment from M11 with a 2GG cost, but, that can be ‘cheated out’ if it’s in your opening hand. As well as the optional (“…you may…”) gain of 1 life “whenever a creature enters the battlefield…” (identical in every respect to the first ability of Suture Priest) it also gives creatures you control +0/+1.

But what I find so interesting, in the case of Suture Priest, is its complementary second ability of “whenever a creature enters the battlefield under an opponent’s control you may have that player lose 1 life”. So, let’s take a look at permanents that have similar abilities. Well I found two, not surprisingly, they’re black.

Blood Seeker, the 1/1 for 1B, Creature – Vampire Shaman from Zendikar. With exactly the same optional ability.

Blood_Seeker

Poisonbelly Ogre, the costly 3/3 for 4B, Creature – Ogre Warrior from Guildpack. This has the non-optional version of the ‘life lose’ ability.

Hmmm. B/W Vampire Swarm deck, anyone?

And what about the interesting combo with Infernal Genesis, the 4BB Enchantment from Prophecy:

Infernal_Genesis

“At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, that player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard. Then he or she puts X 1/1 black Minion creature tokens onto the battlefield, where X is that card’s converted mana cost.”

Mirrodin Besieged Game Day – March 5-6

February 15, 2011 1 comment

The upcoming game day will be the first chance to get hold of cards from the next set, at this stage codename ‘Action’. When the set is finally released, ‘Action’ will be either Mirrodin Pure or New Phyrexia. But not both.

Although WOTC have already decided what they are going to call the new set. They figure that, if they don’t say at this stage, you can pick a side at the game day without knowing who is going to win.

so, at the Mirrodin Besieged Game Day, on March 5 and 6, if you pick to play a Mirran-affiliated deck and win, you’ll get a card from Mirrodin Pure, (Pristine Talisman) and if you pick to play Phyrexian-affiliated deck and win, you’ll get a card from New Phyrexia (Suture Priest). You don’t have to do either one, but the Action cards will only go to the top players from each faction.

The factionalization rules are the same as those for the Scars of Mirrodin Game Day.

Both cards will be in ‘Action’, but one of them won’t be printed with the expansion symbol you see on the ones from the game day.

Mirrodin Besieged – Pre Release, Launch Party & Game Day

January 29, 2011 Leave a comment

With various Mirrodin Beseiged events occuring over the next few weeks, within Nova Scotia, I thought it might be useful to include a link to the appropriate place on the WOTC website. This way you can check out which stores are running events now that WOTC has placed emphsis for events/FNM back on ‘brick and mortar’ stores.
