Top 8 – Black 1-drop Flyers

Once again there are actually only 8 ‘pure’ black 1-drop flyers in the history of magic.

•  Will-o’-the-Wisp
• Putrid Imp
• Circling Vultures
• Vampire Bats
• Nightshade Stinger
• Pit Imp
• Molting Harpy
• Phyrexian Battleflies

The two other 1-drop flyers that come up if you do a gatherer search either require hybrid mana or other colors as part of there ability activation:

• Oona’s Gatewarden
• Dreadwing

As for 1-drop ground troops, what a nice list this is:

• Disciple of the Vault
• Fume Spitter
• Typhoid Rats
• Diregraf Ghoul
• Festering Goblin
• Kederekt Parasite
• Mortician Beetle
• Vampire Lacerator

Top 8 – Red 1-Drop Flyers

Ok. This list should be interesting. Oh, none you say, not one red 1-drop flyer in Magic.

The bottom line is that red does not have any 1-drop that hit the battlefield with flying. You can activate certain cards once they are in play, to give them flying. But they don’t come into play in their ‘vanilla’ state with flying. There are some red 1-drop creatres which have abilities that give them flying, these are:

• Goblin Balloon Brigade
• Roc Hatchling
• Raka Disciple

While turning our atention to straight red 1-drops there are a number of high quality candidates. making a top 8 for these a breeze:

• Dragonmaster Outcast
• Goblin Welder
• Goblin Lackey
• Grim Lavamancer
• Flamekin Harbinger
• Goblin Guide
• Stromkirk Noble
• Kird Ape

Top 8 – Green 1-Drop Flyers

Following on with the series of posts on 1-drop flyers, once again we will be struggling to find 8 flyers in green, regardless of quality. I count a mere four:

• Birds of Paradise
• Xantid Swarm
• Scryb Sprites
• Uktabi Drake

There are also a number of 1-drops in green which have reach:

• Ezuri’s Archers
• Traproot Kami
• Wall of Vines
• Tree Monkey

And plenty of 1-drop quality green weenies without  flying or reach that you could create a solid top 8 with:

• Noble Hierarch
• Wild Nacatl
• Joraga Warcaller
• Basking Rootwalla
• Heritage Druid
• Arbor Elf
• Fyndhorn Elves
• Quirion Ranger

Top 8 – White 1-Drop Flyers

Following on from yesterdays post regarding the elusive Blue 1-drop flyer, I thought I would continue this theme with the White 1-Drop Flyer. So, here is the list I attempted to put together:

• Glint Hawk
• Suntail Hawk
• Tethered Griffin
• Golden Glow Moth
• Lantern Kami

Well, once again the list was rather difficult to put together (I didn’t include those creatures where flying was an optional ability). As you can see, from above, there are infact only 5 1-drop White flyers in the history of MTG, so far. Maybe it would be better to list top 8 – White 1-Drop Weenies. I expect to get a better list so hear goes:

• Loam Lion (white creature, but, you need to have green to benifit from the ability)
• Student Of Warfare
• Isamaru, Hound of Konda
• Mother of Runes
• Champion of the Parish
• Doomed Traveler
• Deftblade Elite
• Mikaeus, the Lunarch

Top 8 – Blue 1-Drop Flyers

It’s been a while since I have posted, as I have been working on other Magic related stuff. But, I now hope to integrate everything MTG related together a lot better so I should be posting here a lot more in future.

To start things off I am going to do a post regarding those most elusive of creatures the blue flying weenie. So here is my top 8 list of fave blue 1-drop flyers:

• Zephyr Sprite – Magic 2010
• Flying Men – Arabian Nights, Time Spiral “Timeshifted”
• Shrieking Drake – Visions
• Mothdust Changeling – Morningtide
• Skywatcher Adept – Rise of the Eldrazi
• Spindrift Drake – Stronghold
• Caller of Gales – Zendikar
• Cloud Pirates – Portal

Ok, so the list is rather tame. Well not much to work with in this area, it seems that 1-drop flyers in blue are not a really hot commodity. So, lets take a less selective view, perhaps just 1-drop creatures in blue:

• Hedron Crab – Zendikar
• Delver of Secrets – Innistrad
• Vedalken Certarch - Scars of Mirrodin
• Kraken Hatchling – Zendikar
• Phantasmal Bear – Magic 2012
• Cursecatcher - Shadowmoor
• Cosi’s Trickster – Zendikar
• Zephyr Sprite – Magic 2010

That’s more like it. Guess it illustrates why having ‘ground troops’ is so important in a mono-blue deck were you are choosing to run more costly blue flyers, if you want something solid to deal with an early threat.
